From space to paediatric medicine: Bosch collaborates with Highmark Health to transform the treatment and diagnosis of asthma

In line with its invented for life philosophy, Bosch has just launched a new research collaboration project with the non-profit USA healthcare company Highmark Health.

Since late 2019, the Bosch SoundSee sensory system, has been traveling through space to identify unusual sounds on the International Space Station, using AI algorithms to analyse and indicate when maintenance is needed.

Bosch and Highmark Health are now pursuing a completely down-to-earth use of this technology, by working to adapt the sensors in a way that will enable them to detect pulmonary conditions, such as asthma, at an early stage just by listening to children’s breathing patterns.

Through this partnership with Highmark Health, we are hoping to develop a unique piece of AI technology that reliably spots early signs of asthma and predicts asthma attacks in response to changes in breathing patterns, which has never been done before.

The pilot for this technology will take place in Pittsburgh (USA) at the end of January, where scientists will apply the same principles of the stethoscope by using the Bosch AI-enabled sensor technology to listen and detect audio cues that could help with patient diagnosis.

These AI capabilities could have the potential to improve patient-based, at-home care where audio AI-based diagnostic results can be reported to a doctor for further analysis and action.

The aim is for users to be able to ‘get ahead’ of an acute attack and seek the necessary medication or care before the situation escalates, which is particularly useful for young children who may not be able to spot the signs themselves as quickly. It’s really exciting to be working on this project, and to be developing space technology that can be applied to people’s health is just amazing.

The long-term view is for the tech to be usable in a home setting as well as in healthcare environments, becoming an integrated part of the daily routine and in turn improving the lives of those managing respiratory conditions.
