Electric car knowledge is driven by confusion
When it comes to cars and sustainability, achieving success will be no easy ride.
07-02-2020
- New research reveals that 70% do not understand that electric vehicles (EVs) are in fact not totally carbon neutral
- Suggesting Brits are unaware that there are other alternatives for decarbonisation such as hydrogen/fuel cells and synthetic fuels
- Despite confusion 66% of Brits claim they will have switched to full electric or hybrid in the next 10 years
- Bosch calls for public and private sectors to collaborate on a national strategy which uses electrification and a technology neutral approach to help the UK reach its 2050 carbon zero target, as the government bans the sale of new petrol, diesel and hybrid cars by 2035
About the research
Barriers to success
- Consumers are worried about running out of power: 70% people think every fuel station or forecourt should have an EV charger, 60% want every public car space to have an EV charger and 55% want every new build home to have an EV charger. The automotive technology leader is calling for a new national strategy to help deliver these necessary changes and allow Brits to get to grips with how to achieve the 2050 goal.
Environmental
- Are consumers choosing electromobility for the right reasons? Only 30% of people recognise that there is still an environmental impact from generating the required additional electricity and from the production and disposal of electric batteries.
- Legacy vehicles that are already on the road will also have to play their part in cutting CO2 emissions. Synthetic fuels will play a huge role in cutting down this environmental impact as they are made exclusively with energy obtained from renewable sources such as the sun or wind. When vehicles on the road are powered by synthetic fuels, they are ultimately climate-neutral.
- Bosch is also continuing to invest in highly efficient combustion engines, as globally two out of every three newly registered vehicles in 2030 will still rely on internal combustion engines, mostly as part of a hybrid powertrain solution.
Generational
- The latest thing in technology: Younger drivers (18-24-year-olds) are almost twenty times as likely to want to own an EV than the over 55s (13.7% vs 0.7%) and are also three times as likely to buy their first EV this year (2020) – 14.5% vs 4.6%. The generational divide is further cemented with older drivers being four times as likely to say they will NEVER buy an EV vs younger (under 25) drivers – 29% vs 8%).
Usage
- Embracing the trend: 9 in 10 (87%) people still own a petrol/diesel car today, but 66% claim they will have switched to full-electric or hybrid by 2030.
