Igniting the Minds of Future Innovators
Following the success of our regional Challenge and Explore tournaments over the past year we are continuing to partner with FIRST® LEGO® League and the UK’s delivery partner the Institute of Technology and Engineering (IET) to host these events across the UK once again.
Recently, we welcomed six teams aged 9-16 to our Coventry site to take part in the first of three Challenge tournaments, to test their robot design skills and present their innovative solutions to a panel of Bosch judges.
This year’s theme, ‘Masterpiece’ looks at the integration of the Arts into the existing STEM umbrella (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). By shining a spotlight on the role STEM plays in the arts, teams will imagine and innovate new ways to create, inspire and communicate art across the globe.
As part of the event each team had to work together to design, build and program a robot that was then tested in an exciting, mission-based robotics game. The game consisted of three matches where the teams were challenged to complete as many missions as they could in a two-and-a-half-minute round. Teams also had to present their ‘Innovation Project’ which involves coming up with a solution to a real-world problem relating to the ‘Masterpiece’ theme. The project assesses the group’s ability to be creative and work together as a team.
Students also took the opportunity to speak with Bosch associates about their work in STEM industries and took a keen interest in their career journeys.
‘Team CERC’ were announced the Tournament Champions and will progress on to the national final in Harrogate on the 20th April.
We would also like to congratulate all teams on their outstanding effort and commitment.

Barrie Flemming, Bosch UK’s STEM and schools outreach co-ordinator, said: “A huge shout out to our enthusiastic volunteers who gave their time, energy and expertise to make this a successful event. Their efforts have undoubtedly sparked curiosity, igniting imagination and planted the seeds of future innovation.”
What is Lego League?
FIRST® LEGO® League is an exciting hands-on program which engages children between the ages of 4-16 to understand the basics of STEM and apply their skills in an exciting competition. The ‘Challenge tournament, allows the older students, aged between 9-16 to practice their skills in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering to better prepare them for their future careers.
