125 Acts of Kindness

Leaving a legacy of kindness

Our founder, Robert Bosch, was committed to providing his associates with a positive working environment alongside a focus on social responsibility and improving lives. In light of these values that make Bosch the workplace that it is today, the 125 Acts of Kindness challenge is an initiative for Bosch UK associates that honours the 125 year legacy of Robert Bosch as well as ensuring we continue to ‘pay it forward’ with our legacy for the future.

Last month, we shared the Acts of Kindness that our associates had been taking part in to highlight our associates’ enthusiasm for building a business committed to people, purpose, and social responsibility ahead of the kick-off of Bosch UK’s 125th anniversary. Since then, associates have been busy sharing their stories and shining a spotlight on the Acts of Kindness that they or their colleagues have been part of. Take a look through the examples below to see a selection of the stories received to date.

Wendy Kite, Project Manager, Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions, Bosch UK – ‘Solemother’

Leaving a legacy of kindness

In 2017, Wendy and a few friends set up a running group called ‘Solemother’ which has now grown to over 2000 members! Over the course of the last five years, the group has been involved in multiple acts of kindness. During the covid lockdown about 30 members volunteered at local covid vaccine clinics to support their doctor’s surgery to manage patients. They have been involved in a number of community initiatives including litter picking, fund-raising for and supporting local charities, collecting for womens’ refuges, winter packages for the elderly in the community, and Christmas collections for social service families. The Solemother initiative has so far won awards including the Greater Manchester Sports Award 2019 – Initiative of the Year, also the 2019 Trafford Sports Award for Community Initiative of the Year.

“My nomination is not really for myself as I am a small part of this initiative, it is really being made in order to advertise the fact that community initiatives such as this can be built and can make a real difference to people’s lives. I also believe that the strapline and philosophy of ‘Women Supporting Women’ can be very powerful and could help women in the workplace at Bosch.” – Wendy

Melanie Torrent, Sven Torrent, Lisa Marwick, Lisa Bristow, Edna Costa, Allan Ovington – Worcester Bosch – fancy dress half marathon Winter Walk

“On the 28th of June 2021 Mel Torrent, a logistics engineer at Worcester Bosch, suffered from a Sub Arachnoid Haemorrhage, a bleed in her brain. Over the next month’s Mel had many more complications along with contracting Covid 19. These were the very darkest days for Mel and her family, and on many occasions her family were asked to come to the hospital to say their goodbyes. Despite this Mel pulled through and after many months of rehabilitation in hospital and at home Mel has learnt to walk and talk once more. Just a few meters at first, with a few words, then a few more and then a few more.

Leaving a legacy of kindness

Each day Mel has pushed herself to greater and greater distances, and after only 6 months of training Mel has just completed a half Marathon walk, 21km, in London in January 2023. There were many training walks with support from a great deal of people from Worcester Bosch colleagues, and friends outside Bosch. Worcester Bosch have supported Mel and Sven greatly over the past 18 months in every way possible; the support they gave Mel and Sven in London was one more example of the kindness and help that the team in Worcester give so freely. The walk started at 10:30am, in full fancy dress and they crossed the finish line just over 6 hours later, shattered but very happy.” Sven Torrent

Tony Shepherd, Head of Crime Prevention and Investigations, Bosch UK – coming to the rescue with first aid training

Leaving a legacy of kindness

Grovener Mackey, Facilities Manager, Health Safety & Environment & Protection Security Partner, Bosch UK, shared an Act of Kindness by fellow associate, Tony Shepherd:

“On the 20th January 2022 I was with Tony at a restaurant when food got lodged in my throat, Tony saved my life by carrying out back slaps and abdominal thrusts. It was at the point I was about to become unconscious and with the second round of back slaps and abdominal thrust he was successful in dislodging the food. I attended hospital via ambulance and was told that Tony saved my life.

This was a timely reminder to me that Tony, following his UK military policing career, has continued to support his local community and colleagues in his free time. With over 21 years of voluntary teaching both police and ambulance services, not to mention at Bosch with Corporate Security.

Subsequently he continues to give up a lot of his free time with the support of Bosch to support the wider community in and around Uxbridge and large areas of London. Tony does this by serving in the London Ambulance Service as a Fast Response Unit Driver on cars, as a high-level ambulance technician and member of the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Medicine, Royal College of Surgeons.

Tony enjoys providing lifesaving service to our communities and Bosch associates, doing this without financial reward. The knowledge, expertise, and skills he has amassed over 40+ years is a true kindness.”

Myra Martin – Glenrothes team – support through bereavement

“I would like to mention my colleagues at Bosch Rexroth in Glenrothes Scotland, especially the sales department and service department for their act of kindness.

I recently lost my partner, Alasdair, unexpectedly due to a short illness. We had been together more than 30 years and have one daughter. The support given by my colleagues was outstanding. They covered for me for the many months I was absent from work, which meant I didn’t have that additional worry. A particular thanks to the support workers who visited me at home on a regular basis, ensuring that my daughter and I were coping with our devastating loss. There was also a huge collection raised for us, by all my Glenrothes colleagues, which was so unexpected, and my daughter and I were so humbled by that.”

Amanda Reed, Telecommunications Coordinator, Bosch UK – fundraising for The Little Princess Trust

Leaving a legacy of kindness

Amanda’s daughter, Eleanor, decided that she wanted to grow her hair for The Little Princess Trust – a charity that makes wigs for children suffering from illnesses – in November 2020. In support of Eleanor, Amanda also grew and cut her hair for the charity. Now, Eleanor’s hair has grown long once again and Eleanor is cutting it for the second time to donate to the same charity.

Mark Simpson and Paul Bowden – fundraising by running in aid of the Trussell Trust

Mark and Paul took part in the Cambridge half-marathon on March 5th in aid of The Trussell Trust, a charity aiming to eradicate food poverty. The Rexroth team are fundraising for The Trussell Trust this year in celebration of their 60th anniversary as well as Bosch UK’s 125th anniversary.

John Milburn, Managing Director, Bosch Service Solutions Limited, Bosch UK – The Big Guitar-In – getting involved in our local communities

Leaving a legacy of kindness
John and his brother and friend on the night.

“On the 7th March 2023, I took part in a local community event in Liverpool - the aim was to get 100 people playing the guitar in one room to raise money and awareness for their community activities

We had over 194 participants including ‘Bonehead’ from Oasis and ‘Nasher’ from Frankie Goes To Hollywood – toddlers to senior citizens – all abilities

Great fun, showing the power of music and the power of community – I was proud to take part and mercifully the sound of the other 193 guitarists drowned out my amateur guitar playing!”
