#WhatDrivesYou? | STEM Q&A

Funmi Ender, Project Manager

WDY - Funmi

There is no doubt that women in STEM careers are often under-represented in industry, yet females across the globe are leading the way in developing pioneering technological solutions.

In part one of our '#WhatDrivesYou?' series, we sat down with Funmi Ender, a project manager at our Automotive Service Solutions business unit in Stockport. Funmi highlighted her thoughts on the STEM industry and offered advice to women who may be looking to develop their careers in this field.

When did you first decide that you wanted a career in STEM?

I have always been interested in STEM from a young age, and took part in science fairs all the way through school. I was raised with a strong sense of understanding that there were different career opportunities available and that they were not only for boys!

So how did that lead you on to your current position within Bosch, and how did you find the application process?

I chose to work for Bosch because it is a truly global company, with an abundance of opportunities to grow my career. I found the application process very straightforward, it consisted of my application and two subsequent interviews.

How has your experience been as a woman in the STEM industry?

I have been very lucky as I have not experienced anything that has held me back in any way. However, I am usually the minority in a group, and would love to see more women in a technical role.

Do you take part in any STEM activities outside of work? And how does that relate to your role here at Bosch?

My role gives me the opportunity to offer first-hand knowledge of the STEM industry to those who are still thinking about their own career paths.

I regularly volunteer at schools and career fairs, where I promote engineering as a vocation to all. I have also took part in speed networking events, where students have the opportunity to ask personal questions about my experiences. Alongside this, I mentor a student through monthly meetings to help her with career choices from an early age.

Do you have a role model, and if so why?

I don’t have a specific role model. I believe that I can learn from people around me, and take inspiration from their own stories and personal experiences.

What’s a piece of advice you would give yourself five or ten years ago?

I would tell myself to be patient and not map out a career path too far along in the future. Sometimes life offers pleasant opportunities, and it’s far better to be open minded and pursue these prospects rather than sticking to a specific career map.

How can the industry improve in getting more women involved?

I think career fairs and recruitment days that are exclusive to girls should be given serious consideration, alongside engaging with girls at an early age before GCSE options are selected. We need to get girls studying STEM subjects from an early age, and parents, schools and industry all have a part to play in this!

And finally, does Bosch offer good opportunities for women in technology, and if so why?

Bosch is a great employer for all genders. They offer flexible working and many opportunities to work in different industries across the globe. As a woman, I have felt that I am treated equally to my male colleagues and this is very important to me. It is not about women getting special treatment in the workplace but for me, it is about being treated fairly.
